2012 Audi TT RS

Tuesday, April 10, 2012

The most significant difference between the TT RS and humbler TT models is a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-five that recalls the engine used by the legendary Audi Quattro rally car of the 1980s. With 360 horsepower and 343 lb-ft of torque on tap, Audi says that the TT RS can sprint from zero-to-60 in just 4.1 seconds and attain a top speed of 171 mph. Aiding the car’s accelerative efforts is Audi’s trademark quattro all-wheel drive system, which does an effective job applying all of the power to pavement.

A traditional six-speed manual is the only transmission available. Despite its high levels of performance, the TT RS is far from being fuel guzzler, with respectable 18/25 mpg ratings in city and highway testing, respectively.
Powering the TT-RS is a turbocharged 2.5-liter 5-cylinder making an incredible 360-hp and 343 lb-ft of torque. For the record, that's 160-hp more than a run of the mill TT, an increase of 80 percent.

Dive into a corner hard and the TT-RS has lots of power to get you out the other side. And it's hard to overstate the capability of quattro AWD. A suspension that's been lowered by almost half an inch also helps keep the car's weight down low, and it transitions excellently.

On the street Audi claims a 0-60 mph time of just 4.1 seconds. That's over a half a second faster than BMW's 1M and three-tenths quicker than even the R8, despite being down 70-hp.
At a list price of $56,850, the 2012 Audi TT RS is highly competitive and in good company with the likes of BMW 1 Series M, Lotus Evora S and the Porsche Cayman S and R. Often, high-performance cars that look impressive on paper fall short of expectations when you climb aboard. But in the case of the TT RS, it is quite the opposite. The more time you spend driving the car, the more you will appreciate the sum of its parts. It’s simply one of the most exciting sports cars on the market today.
